We've been on a sustainability journey for a while now and want to share some of our steps with you.
Every positive action helps and we're working towards doing our best to leave a lighter footprint.
Some of the ways we try to make a difference are:
FAIR TRADE FACTORY
We spent a few days at the fair trade factory in India viewing all parts of the processes. We were very impressed with the worker's conditions, the evident professionalism and the dedication of all involved.
The factory is a family run business that has been in operation since the 1930's. About 17 years ago they realised the importance of operating in a more socially and ecologically responsible way. It was then that they gained fair trade certification and started using only organic cotton.
Our aim is to continue to increase the number of pieces we have available that are made using organic fabrics in this fair trade certified factory in India.
We are constantly striving to make our garments & bedding from the most sustainable fabrics and methods possible. These items are made by people who are paid and treated fairly.
ORGANIC COTTON
Our organic cotton is sourced from The Chetna Project, an organisation dedicated to working with small farmers to improve their livelihoods. It enables them to make a living via sustainable farming practices.
This organic cotton is used for our bedding and clothing.
All items made with organic cotton are clearly labelled on the garment swing tag, bedding bag or product page when purchasing through our online store.
WHY ORGANIC COTTON?
We love light cotton fabrics and have used them for years. Cotton is cool on the skin and becomes softer with each wash.
Cotton fibre is a natural plant based fibre which is soft, absorbent and breathable. It is non-allergenic and durable.
Organic cotton represents a return to safe and sustainable practices. It is grown with natural fertilisers and is free from toxic chemicals.
Organic farmers rely on crop rotation to replenish and maintain soil fertility. Mechanical cultivation and botanical or biological means are used to control pests and weeds.
A field must be pesticide-free for at least three years to be certified organic, and the cotton must be processed according to international organic standards.
They have a waste water treatment system at the factory in Kolkata to clean the water used in the manufacturing process.
THE CHETNA PROJECT
Our organic cotton is sourced from the Chetna project.
Chetna Organic works with small and marginalised farmers to improve their livelihood and make farming a sustainable and profitable occupation.
The farmers included in the project are from the rainfed regions of Maharashtra, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh covering around 35000 acres.
The project has grown from 234 farmer members in 2004 to around 15,300 in 2012. Chetna's strength has been in collective action and a fair supply chain.
The positive results of the Chetna Organic & Fair Trade Cotton project are proven by the stabilised socio-economic conditions of this group of farmers.
The biggest benefit of organic cotton remains the environmental aspect: the crops are not treated with pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and GMO. These substances are harmful to farmers and workers, to the end consumers and to entire wildlife eco-system.
Organic cotton is grown in a way that uses methods and materials that lessen the impact on our environment. An important difference with organic growing systems is that they replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture. Organic cotton uses far less water too.
As a consumer, your choice can save the lives of farmers, rivers and streams and give young people a chance to grow up in a clean and safe environment.

COTTON JERSEY BEDDING
Our 100% organic cotton jersey is a knitted fabric often used for tshirts. We chose it for our bedding range as its soft, cosy and easy care... absolutely no ironing necessary!
The jersey fabric for our rosette quilts is made in-house in our Kolkata factory in a room that looks like it is the lair of a giant, very organised spider. The yarns spin around massive looms and suddenly come out as lovely soft cotton jersey.

NEW SUSTAINABLE VISCOSE MOSS
Livaeco Viscose is a type of natural fibre created from wood pulp, it has good drape and a soft hand. The moss gives a crinkle, crimped or grained look.
